---- — PEKIN – Pekin did everything they needed to do for most of the night to pull out a Southeast Iowa Superconference north division softball win Thursday night against Wapello. The Panthers played flawless defense for five innings in which Pekin held a 4-1 edge overall on the scoreboard.
Seven errors combined in the first and fourth errors, however, helped open the doors for Wapello to score eight runs including six unearned scores. The result was a 9-4 victory for Wapello and season sweep of the Panthers.
“We gave up seven outs in the first inning. They scored three runs without a hit,” Pekin head coach Bryan Marley said. “When you extend innings like that, you’re going to give up big innings.”
Brittany Gillam had a pair of hits and a pair of runs for the Panthers while Cheyann Lankford came up with two hits and a run. Pekin (8-6, 7-3) plays at the Woodward-Granger Tournament on Saturday with games against Panorama at 10 a.m., Saydel at Noon and Woodward-Granger at 2 p.m.
