Mid-season races are here

---- — Hello race fans and welcome to The Pit Stop.

It is hard to believe that it is mid-season championship time at some of the tracks in the area. It seems like just a week or so ago I wrote the first Pit Stop of the race season and here we are coming up on the half-way point of the 2013 racing campaign.

The Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa once again kicks off the week of racing tomorrow night with the night being sponsored by Drost Equipment and Jerry’s Pro Collision Center. The IMCA Late Models make their third appearance at the track and there will also be race car rides for the kids.

I know the kids really enjoy riding around the track on in a race car. The looks on their faces and the excitement they show is priceless.

Merv Chandler of Urbana is the point leader in the IMCA Sport Compacts coming into this week of racing. The IMCA Hobby Stock division has Ottumwa driver, Dustin Griffiths, leading his team mate, Dale Porter of Bloomfield by seven points. These two are part of the Blind Squirrel race team.

Nathan Wood of Sigourney has a sizeable lead in the IMCA Stock Cars as he proves that consistency in finishing races is the key to winning a track championship. Wood got his first win of 2013 at Osky last week, but he is almost always in the hunt for the top spot in the feature.

The IMCA Sport Modifieds has a close battle between local drivers at the top of the standings where Brett Lowry of Montezuma has a seven point lead over Curtis Van Der Wal of Oskaloosa. Just five points behind Van Der Wal is Jason McDaniel of Eldon.

In the IMCA Modifieds, Cayden Carter of Oskaloosa is in second place by only four points to Jacob Murray of Hartford. There is still a lot of racing to take place so these positions can change each week.

The Knoxville Raceway has two nights of racing action scheduled this week with Friday night being Nostalgia at Knoxville. This is a night where cars from the past come in and do some racing on the big half-mile.

Saturday night, they are having their mid-season championships where it is Farm Bureau Night. The 305 Sprinters will be racing and they will also be having the Knoxville Raceway Hall of Fame Induction Banquet.

An Aussie leads the 410 Sprinters coming into this weekend of racing with Ian Madsen, who hails from St. Mary’s, NSW, Australia, trying to hold off Brian Brown of Grain Valley, Missouri, for the title. Brown has been really hot the last few weeks of racing and is coming off a second-place finish this past Saturday night to Donny Schatz as the STP World of Outlaws made their final appearance at Knoxville before they come back to compete during the FVP Knoxville Nationals in August.

Clint Garner of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is the leader in the 360 division with Nate Van Haaften of Otley in second. Tyler Groenendyk of Oskaloosa currently sits in eighth place in points.

The 305 sprint division has Matthew Stelzer of Omaha, Nebraska, with a slim lead over Larry Ball Jr. of Knoxville in second.

Eddyville Raceway Park just has racing scheduled on Friday night as the track is closed Saturday. Friday is a fun night with the high school division racing as well. It is also a Midnight Madness racing event where they have racing from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The Bloomfield Speedway has their mid-season championships Saturday night with the racing being sponsored by Stampede Graphics and Schaeffer Lubricants.

It will also be John Deere Ottumwa Works Employee and Family Night which was rained out last Saturday night.

That puts a wrap on things for this week. Thanks for reading. I’ll see you at the track. Gone racin’.
