Fourth-ranked Scarlets too much for Bulldogs

OTTUMWA —  The Ottumwa girls basketball team struggled against fourth-ranked Des Moines East’s stifling defense, as the Bulldogs fell to the Scarlets 73-23 in CIML Metro Conference action at Evans Middle School on Tuesday.

“Their athleticism is the most [difficult] we will play all year,” coach Kevin Patterson said. “They are quick at every position. They do a very good job of getting their hands in passing lanes.”

The Bulldogs were dogged by turnovers early, as the Scarlets harassed Ottumwa’s guards with constant double teams. Ottumwa’s guards in particular initially had trouble handling the intense defensive pressure East subjected them to. The Bulldogs committed 13 of their 29 turnovers in the first quarter — many of these turnovers were converted into transition buckets.

East had built a 21-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. After the first quarter, the Scarlets’ high-intensity, in your face defense was less effective, although East still forced Ottumwa to commit 16 more turnovers.

The Scarlets continued to dominate as they went on to pick up a 73-23 victory.

Olivia Roark led the Bulldogs with seven points and Megan Black added four and grabbed four rebounds.

Renise Collier and Shareece Burrell led the Scarlets with 16 each.

Ottumwa (2-7) plays Des Moines North Friday in Des Moines in CIML Metro Conference action.
