The Ottumwa boys basketball team picked up its first win of the season as the Bulldogs defeated Des Moines East 63-61 in a double-overtime thriller Tuesday in CIML Metro Conference action.
Carter Burns led Ottumwa with 31 points and Austin Walker added 13.
Walker and Burns, however, were not the only Bulldogs who came up big in this one. Despite Burns’ epic scoring night, Ottumwa needed — and got — big plays from an array of players to get the win over their conference foe.
For example, Brok Hopwood grabbed an offensive rebound and stuck it back, tying the game at 47 in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.
“Brok had a heckuva a play where he was at the right place at the right time,” coach Chris Gravett said.
The Bulldogs found themselves once again down at the end of the first overtime. This time, however, it was Walker who played the hero, rebounding a Burns’ miss and scoring to send the game into a second overtime. Several seconds before Walker’s shot, Burns buried a long 3-pointer that cut the Scarlets four-point lead down to one. East got a free throw out of their next possession before Walker made the game-saving shot.
In the second overtime, Ottumwa trailed 61-60 in the final minutes when Kyle Keck drove the baseline and knocked down a short jumper that put Ottumwa up by one. After two failed attempts to score by the Scarlets and a free throw by Walker, Ottumwa had picked up its first victory.
“We just made enough plays,” Gravett said. “We had a lot of different guys make big shots at the right times.”
