Warrior softball gets first sweep of season; Friday home opener postponed

Ottumwa Courier

TRENTON, Mo. — Heading into Tuesday, the Indian Hills softball team had scored just three wins in their first 16 games of the season.

On Tuesday, IHCC nearly doubled that win total.

The Warriors had by far the most successful day of the young season, scoring a doubleheader sweep in Missouri at North Central. IHCC won game one, 6-1, and made an early exit from Trenton by dominating game two with a 10-2 five-inning win.

“We had solid pitching and aggressive at-bats all day long,” Indian Hills head softball coach Jim Overturf said. “It was definitely our best, most complete day that we’ve had so far.”

The Warriors (5-13) were supposed to take on Iowa Western in their home and Region XI opener on Friday afternoon. Cold, wet weather however has forced IHCC to postpone that opener to a later date.

“It’s just really soupy down on the field and with the forecast for more cold weather on Friday, we just didn’t feel like it would be proper conditions to open up regional play,” Overturf said. “It’s been a real struggle with the weather. We’re not the only one dealing with it, but it’s making it tough for us to get out and play.”

Both of IHCC’s freshmen starting pitchers went the distance for the Warriors. Kendie Schieber struck out nine batters over seven innings to earn her team-best third win in the circle in game one while Mackenzie Haight allowed just three hits over five innings in the nightcap.

Former Cardinal slugger Felisha Durflinger almost single-handily crushed North Central. Durflinger crushed a homer in both games against the Lady Pirates, collecting two hits, four RBI and two runs in each of the two games on Tuesday.

The Warriors next scheduled games are at home on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader against Illinois Central starting at 1 p.m. While those games are scheduled to go on, Overturf said the current weather conditions also have those games up in the air.

Should Saturday’s games be postponed, IHCC’s next games currently would be scheduled to be in a Region XI doubleheader next Tuesday at Muscatine. Overturf expected to have a decision on the Saturday doubleheader with Illinois Central and a new date for the Iowa Western games later this week.
