Ottumwa American Legion baseball wins first four of season

OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa American Legion baseball team got its season off to a very successful start over the weekend. After dominanting Gilman, picking up wins in five innings 11-1 in game one and 7-1 in game two on Saturday, Ottumwa swept away State Center with a 10-0 shut out in the opener and a 16-2 five-inning win in the nightcap.

Several different players had a role in the four wins over the weekend for Ottumwa. Alex Goodvin had three hits, including a double and two RBI, in the opening win over Gilman while Trent Fowler earned the pitching win in the second game to go along with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

Kris Peden hit the first home run of the season for the Ottumwa American Legion in the opening game against State Center as part of a three-RBI game one effort. Trent Stuchel added three hits and three RBI in the final game of the weekend as the Ottumwa squad finished the weekend outscoring their opponents 44-4 over the four victories.

"The pitchers did a nice job of throwing strikes and the bats came along," Ottumwa American Legion head baseball coach John Hart said. "It was good to get everyone in and good to get a few games in."

The Ottumwa American Legion baseball squad will play their first home game on Wednesday night in a single nine-inning matchup against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont starting at 5:30 p.m. at Legion Memorial Field.
