Dogs pick up 1 win at invite

PLEASANT HILL — The Ottumwa volleyball team (2-8) went 1-4 at the Southeast Polk Invitational Saturday.

The Bulldogs’ sole victory came against CIML Metro Conference rival Des Moines Hoover. Ottumwa beat the Huskies 21-15, 21-8. The girls suffered their losses to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (21-11, 21-18), Southeast Polk (21-12, 21-16), and Cedar Rapids Jefferson (25-23, 25-14).

Chloe Davis went 28-29 on serves and Ellie Hammack went a perfect 17-17 on serves. In addition, Robertson led the Bulldogs with eight aces. Black led the team 16 kills and 38 digs Mallary Simmer led Ottumwa with seven blocks. Besides that, Davis led the team with 27 assists.

“We played some very good competition,” Ottumwa coach Jessica Carson said. “We had some spells where we played really well. We just weren’t able to bounce back after we got ourselves in a little bit of a whole.”

Ottumwa plays at Ankeny tonight. Meanwhile, the Rockets went 4-2 at the invite. E-B-F’s only losses came against Southeast Polk and West Des Moines Valley, as the Rockets fell to the hometown team (21-15, 29-27) and Valley (22-25, 11-25). E-B-F’s victories came against Ottumwa, Des Moines Hoover (21-8, 21-7), Oskaloosa (28-26, 25-14) and Cedar Rapids Jefferson (25-22, 25-19).

E-B-F’s Karlie Taylor finished with 61 kills and and Paige Shafer led the Rockets with 118 assists. Meanwhile, Haegen Boyer had a team-best 45 digs, Tasha Alexander compiled 10 aces and McKinley Moore led E-B-F with 10 blocks.

“We saw different levels of play throughout the day which exposed our weaknesses at this higher level of play E-B-F coach Gladys Genskow said. “This was a new tournament on our schedule this year and we knew going into the day that we would have very tough competition. The girls played very competitive with all the teams and even though we fell short to a couple of teams, we will take this experience and work to be better at this level. I am proud of how hard the girls played all day. “
