OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa golf team took fourth at the Turk Bowman Invitational Monday at the Ames Golf and Country Club in a tournament stacked with high-caliber competition.
Bulldog golf prodigy Matthew Walker was once again Ottumwa’s bellwether, as he finished runner up with an individual score of 69. Ottumwa golf coach Scott Maas said Walker birdied two out the last three holes to finish two under par.
Ranking second among the Bulldogs was Hoyt Grooms, who shot a 78; and Braxton Coble finished right behind him with a 79. In addition, Trey Thomas carded an 80, Gavin Dostal fired a 90 and Jay Bjerke shot a 92.
“We didn’t play really well, but we hung in there,” Maas said. “Fourth place in that field is not too bad. A few good teams beat us, and we beat a few good teams.”
Waukee took first overall with 285 and Ankeny Centennial snared second with a 304. Waukee’s first place finish was spearheaded by Parker Howe, who took first overall with a five-under par score of 66.
The Bulldog linksters compete at the Grandview Golf Course in Des Moines today.
