Walker takes first at Joe August Invitational

MARSHALLTOWN — Matthew Walker took first place at the Joe August Invitational Friday to help the Ottumwa boys' golf team take third out of 12 teams with a collective score of 308.

Walker shot an even 70, which proved to be two strokes better than his nearest competitor.

"I had five birdies and I just played pretty good today," Walker said. "I made quite a few putts today.

Ottumwa's final tally also was buoyed by Trey Thomas, who shot a 75.

"I was making putts and hitting fairways," Thomas said.

Ottumwa's Hoyt Grooms fired a 79, Braxton Coble carded an 84 and Gavin Dostal finished with an 85. In addition, Bulldog Dillon Patritto shot an 87. Ankeny Centennial took first with a 300 and Ottumwa's CIML Metro Conference rival Des Moines Roosevelt finished just one stroke better than the Bulldogs and took second with 307.

Ottumwa plays in the Burlington Invitational at 10 a.m. Monday at the Flint Hills Golf Course.
