---- — EDDYVILLE — After suffering the first two losses of its spectacular volleyball season thus far, fifth-ranked (2A) Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont responded in a big way by rolling in a long-awaited South Central Conference opener.

Karlie Taylor dominated at the net, drilling 23 kills on 30-35 hitting while also serving up a team-high four aces as the Rockets rolled past Clarke in an easy three-game home sweep Tuesday night. EBF won 25-12, 25-17 and 25-13 over the Indians to open SCC action at 1-0.

“We played a solid match. We were dominate on offense as well as serving,” EBF head volleyball head coach Gladys Genskow said. “The girls controlled the match well going into this night with a new line up. You never know how change will go and it went better than expected. I’m proud of how they adapted and worked together.

“We will work to better ourselves in those new positions and keep pressing forward to improve in all aspects of our game.”

The Rockets (15-2) were originally scheduled to open SCC action on the road last week at Centerville before a heat wave caused that match to be postponed. No. 5 (2A) EBF will make up that conference road trip to face the Redettes tonight at Lakeview Gymnasium.

Pekin tops Wapello in four games to earn road SEISC North win

WAPELLO – The Panthers of Pekin battled for each game on Tuesday night to earn a Southeast Iowa Superconference north division road win at Wapello. Three narrow games overcame a big game-three effort by the Arrows as the Panthers picked up the conference match 26-24, 25-23, 18-25 and 25-22.

Beth Atwood again led Pekin at the net, slamming home 14 kills while also picking up a pair of blocks on defense. Whitney Horras dished out 18 assists for the Panthers while Madelyn Baker collected 24 digs as Pekin clinched the win with a great rally, coming back from a seven-point game-four deficit to avoid being forced into a decisive fifth game.

"We had a few slow starts in some of the sets, but came back and played to win, but during the fourth set, Emily Bemis made a great save, brought the ball back into play and Cassidy Tolle sent over a deep free ball that led us to win that point," Pekin head volleyball coach Ashley Bartles said. That was the turning point. Being down by seven, we came back and fought to win the rest of the set."

Pekin (5-4, 3-0) returns to the road for another SEISC North match tonight at Columbus Junction.
