Warrior linksters settle for second at John A. Logan Invite

MARION, Ill. — Heading down the stretch on Sunday, it appeared once again the young Indian Hills golf team would again be in position to carry an overnight lead into the final round of a fall season tournament.

But after losing the overnight lead in its fall opener two weeks ago in Wichita, IHCC lost a four-shot advantage before even making it to the clubhouse Sunday in the opening round at the John A. Logan Invitational. Late struggles in the opening round led to the Warriors looking up at the hosting Trailblazers on the leaderboard when the opening day was over.

That four-shot lead John A. Logan took into Monday’s final round would hold up on the tough Kokopelli Golf Course. Both the Trailblazers and Warriors fired rounds of 307 over the final 18 holes, leaving IHCC as a runner-up to the host school yet again at the Illinois tournament.

“We’ve failed to win the last three times we’ve played here,” Indian Hills head coach Mike Hagen said. “It’s a tough course that’s tough to pick up shots. Being that it’s John A. Logan’s home course certainly does help us, but dropping those eight shots late on Sunday proved to be very costly going into the final day.

“I told my guys that I don’t think I’ve had a team play better on this course in this tournament then we did in those first 14 holes. It’s just disappointing we couldn’t finish that round off.”

Runner-up honors also went home individually to IHCC sophomore Luke Munson, who couldn’t hold off Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Hayes Weatherscy’s final-round charge for the meet medalist honor. Munson settled for second after a three-over 75 Monday and a two-round 147 total while Weatherscy finished even par for the tournament with a one-under final round 71.
