No. 14 Albia boys join No. 2 Pekin girls by win team title at home invite

ALBIA — Colton Dorpinghaus and Mason Cox brought home the team championship for the 14th-ranked (2A) Blue Demon boys in Albia’s home invitational on Monday. Dorpinghaus had a winning time of 17:46 while Cox finished second with a time of 18:07 as Albia scored 20 points to beat the Pekin boys by 49.

The Panthers did collect a team title, however, as Pekin’s second-ranked girls’ cross-country team turned the tables on Albia. Gwynne Wright led a top-three sweep with teammates Shae Dahlstrom and Taylor Lock following across the line as the Panthers’ 21 points was good enough to beat the Lady Dees’ second-place total of 63.

Austin Fariss led the Pekin boys, finishing third in a time of 18:17. Michelle Manser had the top time for the Albia girls, coming home in fourth place in 16:39.

“We had a beautiful night to run. Our athletes seemed to really pick it up running at home. It was great to see,” Albia head cross-country coach Todd Ratliff said. “The girls team continues to improve. The guys team looked fresh and it was great to see them get after things at home. We look forward to a good second half of the season.”

Both Centerville cross-country teams finished third with the Big Reds scoring 78 points while the Redettes put up 73. Matt Wells finished eighth to lead the Centerville boys in a time of 19:23 while the Centerville girls were led by Cassidy Schacher’s fifth-place run of 16:52.

Chariton got fourth-place finishes for the Charger boys with 87 points and girls with 112. Sam Adams led the boys team by finishing 13th in a time of 20:12 while Maria Blong finished 16th in 18:48 lead the Chariton girls.

Other area runners at Albia on Monday included Twin Cedars being led by Brittney Roby’s 13th-place run of 17:52 in the girls race while Hunter Carlson finished 30th to lead the Saber boys. Emily Warren finished 29th in the girls race for Moravia in a time of 21:19.
