OHS harriers score in top four at Williams Invite

IOWA CITY — It was Iowa City High’s home invitational, and the Little Hawk cross-country teams treated like a home celebration.

That didn’t mean, however, that the Ottumwa and Pekin cross-country teams didn’t have plenty of positives to take out of the Bud Williams Invite on Thursday. While Iowa City High put up a perfect score in the boys race, both junior varsity races and claimed all four team championships, the Bulldogs and Panthers left the University of Iowa cross-country course feeling good about the effort given with just three weeks to go before the two teams compete for state meet berths.

The second-ranked (1A) Pekin girls, in fact, just missed out on preventing a City High sweep of the varsity team titles. The Panthers got top-five runs by Taylor Lock (third in 15:45), Gwynne Wright (fourth in 15:50) and Shae Dalhstrom (fifth in 15:52) to counter a top-two sweep by Little Hawk teammates Mollie Shepherd and Mary Arch as Pekin’s final total of 43 came up just eight points shy of City High’s winning total.

The Ottumwa girls, meanwhile, got a top-10 run by Daylin Latham. The 10th-place finish for the Bulldogs’ top female runner in a time of 16:34 led OHS to a fourth-place finish as a team with 90 total points.

“This is the best race we’ve run as a team and as individuals, which is perfect timing as we’re getting late in the season,” Ottumwa head girls’ cross-country coach Angela Chaney said. “We’re starting to get to that championship portion of the season. I really commended the girls. Every time I asked them to do something strategic on the course, they did it. It’s really a positive thing to see all the hard work of the entire season really starting to pay off.”

Bulldog head boys’ cross-country coach Jeff Smith was also very pleased with the efforts of his team Thursday in Iowa City. The 13th-ranked Little Hawk boys also earned the team title with a perfect score of 15 points, placing 13 runners in the top 16.

One of the few boys to break into the top 10 not wearing an Iowa City High jersey was Bulldog senior Cody McConnell, who came home seventh in the race in a time of 17:31. Collin McConnell followed up his brother’s run with a 27th-place finish in a time of 18:33 as the Ottumwa boys finished third as a team with 98 points.

Cody knocked 30 seconds off his time. Colin knocked over 40 seconds off,” Smith said. “I thought we ran well as a team. Those second tier of runners really push each other and cluster together, which really helps our team scoring. Overall, I thought it was a really productive meet.”

Pekin produced 128 points to finish fifth as a team in what was the second trip to the home course of the Iowa Hawkeyes this week. On Tuesday, the Panther cross-country teams competed at Iowa City West with the Pekin girls scoring a 10th-place team finish while the Panther boys finished 13th.No boys team was going to take the title away from Iowa City High. Ryan Dorman’s winning time of 16:38 led five straight Little Hawk runners across the finish line to lock the team title down with the best possible finish for a team with a maximum 15 team points scored.

“This meet was a little bit different because you could run up to 14 runners and Iowa City High took advantage of that,” Smith said. “That gives you a good indication of how talented a team they are. We welcome that. We want to face the best teams in the state. I can definitely say we got better.”

The Ottumwa cross-country teams are back on the course Tuesday for the first of two meets next week. The Bulldogs will join several area teams at Centerville’s "Big Red/Redette" Invitational.

“We’re down to our last four meets and our last two-meet week coming up,” Smith said. “We’re definitely looking forward to improving off of this performance on Tuesday.”
