Walker to defend state golf championship; Bulldogs finish fourth at districts

CEDAR RAPIDS — While Matthew Walker's season is still alive, the same can't be said for the rest of the Ottumwa golf team.

The Bulldog linksters were four strokes away from advancing to the Class 4A state championship, but in the end they had to settle for fourth at the Class 4A districts with a combined score of 317. Walker, however, secured his chance to defend his Class 4A state championship with a score of 74. After he finished his round, Walker was embroiled in a three-person playoff with Marshalltown's Michael Schrempf and the Cougars' Conner Koberg. Schrempf prevailed, but Walker nabbed second.

"I just hung in there," Walker said. "I didn't play very well. I did hit my drives pretty good."

"I'm happy for Matt," Ottumwa golf coach Scott Maas added. "He gets a chance to defend his championship.

Hoyt Grooms performed laudably in the last round of his Ottumwa golf career, carding a 78. Grooms pinpointed the highlight of his round.

"I chipped in a birdie," he said.

Braxton Coble also turned in a solid outing, as he shot a 78. In addition, Gavin Dostal fired an 87, Gavin Trey Thomas shot a 90 and Dillon Patritto finished with a 91.

Golf powerhouse Cedar Rapids Kennedy shot 299, Cedar Rapids Washington grabbed second with a 310 and Cedar Rapids Xavier snared third with 313. Davis Sutton finished first overall with a 73.Walker competes in the Class 4A state tournament Friday and Saturday at the Hunter Ridge Golf Course in Marion.
