Ottumwa Courier

CENTERVILLE — As the race for the South Central Conference title resumed on Friday, the Centerville boys basketball team staked an early claim to the crown. Michael Starcevich scored 19 points while Kolton Gonnerman added 18 as the Big Reds built a big 20-6 lead early in a 64-47 win over Chariton.

Starcevich nailed three 3-pointers as Centerville closed the game in style, outscoring Chariton 24-15 in the fourth quarter after the Chargers closed to within eight after three.

“It was kind of a game where the first and fourth quarter decided it,” Chariton head coach Ben Schooley said. “We gave up 44 points in those two quarters combined, so we didn’t start very well and didn’t finish well either.”

Alex Wright scored 15 points to lead the Chargers, including a 3-5 shooting effort from 3-point territory. Chariton (7-2, 3-2) returns to action today at Wayne while Centerville (7-1, 4-0) rides a seven-game winning streak into a matchup at defending 3A state champion Mount Pleasant on Tuesday.
