AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL ACTION: Tracy scores 26 as Mohawks remain perfect

LAMONI — Katelynn Tracy’s 26 points and 17 rebounds proved to be more than enough to lift the 12th-ranked (Class 1A) Moravia girls basketball team to a 51-28 victory over Lamoni Friday in Bluegrass Conference action.

“I bet she had at least six and-one’s,” Moravia coach Clint Woodward said. “She was being strong and finishing strong.”

Mohawk Kendall Brown compiled 11 points and and swatted six shots — Brown and Tracy combined for 12 blocks. Jenna Sheehan keyed Moravia’s offense, as she dished out a team-high six assists and Hannah Eastlick and and Autumn McDanel had three steals each.

Moravia (11-0, 6-0) plays host to Moulton-Udell in the first round of the Bluegrass Conference tournament Monday.

OSKALOOSA — Kena Veldhuizen poured in 27 points and the 15th-ranked (Class 4A) Oskaloosa girls basketball team trounced Newton, 57-38 Friday in a Little Hawkeye Conference game.

“She drove the ball extremely well,” coach Steve Kaisand said. “If they laid off her, she would hit the jumper.”

Taylor Crawford added seven points to Oskaloosa’s final tally and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. In addition, Taylor Richardson scored six and Allie Christenson handed out a team-best three assists.

The Indians started strong, jumping out to a 17-8 lead at the start of the first quarter; a lead that would only grow in the next two quarter.

“We came out putting a lot of pressure on, making them [Newton] play a little faster than they wanted to,” Kaisand said. “We did a great job of attacking the rim and switching on defense when we needed to, and that helped us jump out to an early lead.”

The Indians (10-2, 4-1) play host to Washington, ranked ninth in Class 5A and also 10-2 this season, tonight in non-conference action.
