Ottumwa girls remain perfect as Metro kingpins

OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa girls bowling team’s unblemished record remained intact Thursday as the Bulldogs captured first at the Metro 7 Conference Championship at Champion Bowl with 2,820 points.

The girls’ success was spearheaded by Bailey Palmer, who bowled the top individual score of the championship with an average of 244.

“Bailey had an excellent day today,” Ottumwa girls coach Doug Techel said.

Michaela Malloy gave her team a boost by taking fourth with an average score of 206.

Meanwhile, the boys team took second with a score of 3,278. The Bulldogs were topped by Des Moines Lincoln, which claimed first with 3,432.

“We bowled our second-best score of the year,” Ottumwa coach Brett Salter said. “Thirty-four-something [Lincoln’s score] is tough to beat; that’s just another league. It was a fun match to be involved in; we just didn’t have enough.”

Jordan Mitchell had a momentous day for Bulldogs as he rolled an average of 236, which was good enough to merit him a fourth-place finish.

“Putting a lot of strikes together really helped me today,” Mitchell said.

Isaac Goodman notched the boys’ second-best score of the night, rolling an average of 225 and finishing fifth overall.

“I felt like I was more there mentally than other games,” Goodman said.

For the girls, Cybil Lennie placed eighth (177), Payton Wilbanks snared ninth (210), Sierra Lennie claimed 13th (159), and Sydney Swallow took 14th (158).

“Our bakers were pretty good today, which makes us more confident going into state,” Maloy said.

Despite the victory, Techel wasn’t satisfied with some aspects of his team’s performance.

“We missed way too many single pin spares,” he said, “so obviously we can’t do that in the next two weeks.”

For the boys, Ottumwa’s Anthony Roberts bowled an average of 214 and finished seventh, Joey Lee grabbed eighth (210), Braxton Coble ninth (210) and Austin Palmer 12th (200).

“Everyone’s bowling well; we just need to bowl a little better,” Salter said.

The boys and girls will compete at the Class 2A district meet Thursday at the Plaza Lanes in Des Moines.
