Sigourney boys fall short against Iowa Valley

SIGOURNEY — The Sigourney boys basketball simply ran out of time to erase an early double-digit deficit against South Iowa Cedar League rival Iowa Valley on Tuesday. Blaine Gretter’s 28 points and eight rebounds helped get the Savages back in the game before the Tigers from Marengo held on for a 66-60 win in the season opener for both teams.

Dakota Cooling and Austin Schalbaugh each had 19 points, helping Iowa Valley open an 18-6 lead after one quarter. The lead grew as large as 17 points in the second before Sigourney started its comeback, scoring 21 second-quarter points to pull within 36-27 by halftime.

“I’m really proud of the way our kids fought back,” Sigourney head boys basketball coach Mitch Estlick said. “We could have just ran away once we down by 17 in the second quarter. They fought back and maybe, with a few extra minutes, we would have won.”

“I told the boys that, over the next 20 to 21 games, we’re going to get our fair share of wins.”

Kevin Weber added 22 points for the Savages (0-1, 0-1), who will look to get its first win on Friday at home against Belle Plaine in an second-straight SICL tilt.
