---- — KEOSAUQUA – The Van Buren softball team used a nine-run second inning to defeat Wapello 14-8 Wednesday.

“The bats are definitely starting to come around,” Warrior coach Eric Speer said. “This what I expect from the girls. When we play hard and everyone contributes we’re going to be hard to beat.”

Hannah Haynes and Faith Murphy both keyed Van Buren’s victories with a pair of home runs. Haynes two-out home run came in the bottom of the first and Murphy cranked her homer in the sixth.

“They were definitely two big spots for home runs,” Speer said.

Haynes also went 2-4 at the plate and drove in three runs and Abby Rider went 2-3 with an RBI. In addition, Taylor Murguia doubled and drove in two RBI and Jordan Billups went 2-4.

Van Buren hosted to New London Thursday in Southeast Iowa Superconference South action as the Courier went to press. The Warriors (7-11, 2-7) will also host Davis County today.
