Centerville ekes out win over Fairfield

FAIRFIELD —  The Centerville boys' basketball team picked up a narrow victory over Fairfield  55-53 Tuesday in a competitive non-conference game.

"It had a postseason feel to it," Big Reds basketball coach Matt Kruzich said, "both teams were battling toe to toe. It was the last man standing."

Kolton Gonnerman paced the Big Reds with 17 and Mike Starcevich added 15 and was the source of Centerville's two 3-pointers. In addition, Jared Armington corralled a team-high six rebounds and Brett Kauzlarich dished out a team-best six assists.

Meanwhile, Matt Carr catalyzed the Trojan offense by posting a team-high 16 points and drilling three of Fairfield's six 3-pointers.  Federico Ferretti also bolstered the Trojan offense with 12 points. In addition, Fairfield's Cameron Baumann pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, Joe Hietpas came up with four steals and Ferretti catalyzed the Demons' offense with four assists.

Fairfield got off to a hot start and led 17-6 by the end of the first quarter. The Big Reds, however, were able to refocus and take control of the game's momentum.

"We dug a hole early and didn't take good enough care of the ball and Fairfield capitalized on that," Kruzich said.  "Once we tightened things up, we scrapped our way back."

Centerville (7-4, 3-1) plays host to Davis County Friday in South Central Conference action.
