LISBON — The Sigourney softball season ended Friday night in Lisbon, when the home standing Lions downed the Savages 9-3 in the Class 1A, Regional 5 semifinals. The 13th-ranked Sigourney softball squad finished 21-6. Even though their season didn't end like they had hoped it would, the squad of Savages with no seniors might have one that does in the near future.
Sigourney couldn't have written a better script for the game's beginning. The Savages retired the Lions in order in the top of the game's opening inning. In the bottom of the inning, Becca Ohland hit the second pitch she saw for a line shot homer to left.
The lead was short lived. Lisbon used four hits to score three runs in the second. The big blow was a two-run home run by Cassie Smith. Lisbon added three more in the third to go up 6-1.Smith would again have the big hit as she added a two-RBI single to her stats.
Sigourney fought back with two runs in the bottom of the third. Sydney Davis opened with the first of her three hits and Ohland followed with her second hit. Maddi Denny added a one-out single to load the bases. Bri Schauf launched a two-out double to right center to score two runs. The third Savage runner was thrown out at the plate.
The Lions had four hits in each of the second and third innings. They were a free swinging group to say the least. They only took five called strikes in the entire game.
“We had seen them play three times. We knew they could hit but we had not seen them be that aggressive at the plate,” said Sigourney coach Shelly Streigle.
Sigourney fought to stay in the game and retired the Lions in order in the fourth. The Savages, who had 10 hits in the game, had two of them in the fourth but failed to score, as they had another runner thrown out at the plate.
Sigourney only had two errors defensively, but one came in the fifth as Lisbon went up 7-3 with the unearned run.
The Lions went up 9-3 with two runs in the sixth. Another Savage error caused one of the runs to be unearned.
“It was hard because we were trying to fight back and we gave them some extra chances,” said Streigle.
Sigourney had a hit by Karah Appleget in the sixth but failed to score. Sydney Davis had her third hit with two outs in the seventh but again failed to score to close out the 9-3 Lisbon win. Sigourney had at least one base runner in all but one inning.
“We did a good job of giving ourselves a chance to score but we just didn’t get the timely hit,” said Streigle.
Lisbon (26-15) will face No. 5 Lynnville-Sully on Monday night in Williamsburg in the regional finals for a berth in the 1A State Softball Tournament.
