Big Reds get big SCC win over E-B-F

CENTERVILLE — There was no Christian Bambrook on the floor for Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Thursday. There was also no let-up from the Centerville Big Reds.

With one of EBF’s top players out due to illness, Centerville ran away early with a key early-season showdown in the SCC. The Big Reds opened a 26-8 lead after one quarter, a 48-15 lead at the half and ran away with a 70-44 win over the Rockets.

“That did make a difference on the game,” Centerville head boys basketball coach Matt Kruzich said of Bambrook’s absence. “We were fired up to play EBF. They took the conference last year. We played up tempo, got them into running and played pretty well as a team.”

Kolton Gonnerman scored a team-high 18 points and collected six steals. Logan Dabney added 15 points, six rebounds and five blocks while Garrett Faris added 11 points.

Trevor Leffler led EBF with 18 points, including three of the Rockets’ eight 3-pointers. Centerville (5-1, 3-0) heads to Newton on Saturday while E-B-F (4-3, 0-3) will not return until Friday, Jan. 4 against Albia.
