Bulldog swimmers finish eighth at Mercer Invite

IOWA CITY — The Ottumwa boys swimming team picked up six top-ten finishes, scored in seven of 11 events and finished eighth in their first invitational meet of the season. The Bulldogs scored 108 points on Saturday at Iowa City High’s Mercer Invitational

Ottumwa had a successful day in the relay races. The Bulldogs qualified for the finals of all three relays, finishing seventh in both the 200 medley in 1:15.94 and 200 free relay in a time of 1:42.89.

Grant Gullion and Michael Etnyre each had top ten individual swims and were part of the successful relay teams for the Bulldogs. Gullion swam in all three relays, including the eighth-place finishing 400 free relay team, while also finishing seventh in a time of 58.56 seconds in the 100 butterfly.

Etnyre swam in the 200 medley and free relays while also finishing eighth in the 50 freestyle in 23.93 seconds. The Ottumwa senior also finished 10th in 52.97 seconds in the 100 freestyle.

Johnston won the Mercer Invite with 414 points, besting Bettendorf by 92. Justin Winnett led the way for the Dragons, swimming to victories in the 200 individual medley (1:59.9) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.36) while also participating in winning 200 medley and free relays victories.

Ottumwa will be back in the pool for a busy week on the road prior to the holiday break. At 1-1-1 on the season, the Bulldogs will compete in Burlington against Galesburg, Illinois and the Greyhounds in a double dual before returning to CIML Metro competition Thursday at Des Moines East after swimming to a conference-opening tie against Des Moines Lincoln last week at The Beach.
