Pekin girls win Cornell Co-ed

CEDAR RAPIDS — The Pekin track and field teams battled some of the best schools in the Eastern Iowa metro area Monday, coming out with a team title and several individual victories at the Cornell Co-Ed Relays. The Panther girls picked up the overall team title, edging out North Linn by just nine points with a 147-point total.

The Panther girls picked up a pair of wins on the track at Cornell College. Junior Samantha Wright led a one-two finish with teammate Monica Cooley in the 400 hurdles, taking first in a time of 1:14.3, while Pekin’s 4x800 relay team also won in 10:35.28.

The Pekin boys finished first in six races, including a successful showing in the relays with four victories. The Panthers won the 4x100 (46.0), 4x200 (1:35.64), 4x800 (8:50.16) and distance medley relay in a time of 3:56.26.

The Pekin boys next heads to the Denny White Relays in Mount Pleasant while the Pekin girls track team hosts the Pantherette Relays on Thursday.
