---- — DES MOINES — The Ottumwa cross country teams both turned in solid outings at the East Augustine Invitational Thursday, as the Bulldog squads each finished ahead of their CIML Metro Conference league foes from Des Moines at Ewing Park.

This teams’ achievements were further strengthened by the fact that they competed on the same course they will run on during the CIML Metro Conference championship next Thursday.

“The best thing about tonight is to be able to run on the same course we will run a week from now,” Ottumwa boys’ coach Jeff Smith said.

The Bulldog girls, spurred by Daylin Latham’s second place finish, took second overall with a score of 51, while the boys snared third with 68.

Aside from Latham’s splendid run, which she finished in a time of 17:15, two other Ottumwa girls inhabited the top 10 as well. Georgia Garrett snared eighth in a time of 18:11 and Charlette Flanders came in 10th in 18:21.

Meanwhile, the boys score was buoyed by Cody McConnell, who finished fourth with 17:40. Finishing second among the Bulldog boys was McConnell’s younger brother Collin, who corralled 13th in 18:44. Dalton Bowers finished right behind the younger McConnell in 14th place in 18:44.

For the girls, Ottumwa’s Ashlyn Thompson came in 15th in 18:44. Sam McCoy snared 16th in 18:51 and Jaiden Cloyd grabbed 17th in 18:58. In addition, Bulldog Gracie Rivera placed 24th in 19:44.

“We really came out ready to compete tonight,” Ottumwa girls coach Angie Chaney said. “The girls really like running on this court. As long we can put together a stronger second half of the race, I really think we could be in the hunt for the conference title.”

Marshalltown took first among the girls teams with 24 and North Polk took third with 68.

Other Ottumwa boys’ times include Curtis Ford (17th in 19:12), Shane Riley, (20th in 19:23) and Roger Cruz, who corralled 26th place with a time of 19:48. In addition, Jenelson Cano-Lopez finished 36th in 21:12.

“I think we ran very hard and were very competitive, finishing third,” Smith said.

The coach noted that his team ran a very tough course at Centerville 48 hours before the race began, only to turn around and run what he considered to be an even tougher course at Ewing Park.

“It challenged the kids, but that’s good,” Smith said.

North Polk took first in the boys’ race with 36 and Marshalltown took second with 55.

Des Moines Roosevelt will play host to the CIML Metro Conference meet at Ewing Park Thursday.
