Mustang spikers top Cardinal, V.B. at own triangular

By ROGER THOMAS
Courier correspondent

---- — BLOOMFIELD — The Davis County Mustangs, fresh off hosting their own tournament in which Mustang coach Marty Barnett picked up her 750th win, hosted a triangular Thursday night that brought together three area teams. Cardinal and Van Buren joined the action.

The host Mustangs swept both teams and went undefeated as they ran their record to 25-12. The night started with the DC sweep of Van Buren, 25-5 and 25-8.

Rylee Eakins’ kill tied game one at two. Janelle Fenton then went to the service line and reeled off 14-straight points to put Davis County comfortably up 16-2.

Eakins had two more kills in the run. The short-handed Warriors had trouble receiving serve and, because of that, couldn’t generate any quality hitting.

“It’s a problem that we have had all season,” said Van Buren coach Matt Zeitler. “We just don’t put our hitters in a position to hit.”

Megan Joos and Kate Birchmier carried the hitting for the Mustangs as they closed out game one. Each player had two kills and Joos served the final five points.

Game two again found the Warriors without a presence at the net. Joos got Davis County off to a big lead at the outset.

Nine service points, including two aces, by Joos gave the Mustangs a 10-1 lead. Eakins again had a fast start and her four early kills helped Davis County lead 11-2.

Davis County kept the pressure on the visitors, going 24 of 24 serving. As in the first game, Joos and Birchmier each had two kills to take the Mustangs to the game-two win.

Match two pitted Cardinal against Van Buren. The Comets swept the Warriors by identical game scores of 25-17 in each game.

The first game of the match was close most of the way. Van Buren held early leads until the Comets tied it at 10. The Warrior hitters picked it up and nearly equaled the Comet play at the net.

Alicia Fitzsimmons’ kill kept Van Buren even at 13. The turning point of the game was the four-point service run by Katey Liles to give the Comets the lead at 18-13.

Two more Fitzsimmons kills helped the Warriors stay in it, but Cardinal had all they needed to close it out.

Van Buren, behind the serving of Libby King, ran out to a 10-1 lead. Cardinal, however, had all the answers to get back in game two.

Van Buren led 14-9 as Amy Hart stepped up to serve the Comets into an 18-14 lead. Hart had two aces in the run.

Cassidy McMartin had a kill and a block for a winner, Shelby Smith added a kill and Dakota Durflinger had her second kill during Cardinal the run. McMartin’s kill kept the Comets up 20-17 and her five-point service run ended game two.

“(Thursday) was disappointing because we were just coming off maybe our best match all season (against West Burlington),” said Zeitler. “I just don’t know how you can change gears like that.”

Van Buren is 8-18 as they head to district play against West Burlington next week.

Before Davis County and Cardinal took the court, Davis County recognized five seniors — Rylee Eakins, Shelby Graves, Megan Joos, Caden Dixon, and Bayle Walker.

The Mustangs took control early and easily won game one against the Comets 25-11. Janelle Fenton took the serve with the score tied at two and gave it up with a 10-2 Mustang lead.

Fenton’s serving was bolstered by the red-hot start by Eakins. Eakins had a big block and four kills while Davis County was piling up the 11-3 lead.

Eakins play seemed to intimidate the young Comet hitters. Two of the senior hitters for Cardinal, Leea Ostrander and Hart, combined for three kills but the lead was too much to overcome. Eakins finished it off with back to back kills.

“We just made way too many unforced errors,” said Cardinal coach Jerald Harter. “As far as the hitting goes, if you’re going to play in the middle at the net, you have to expect people to be in your face and go up strong and make the hit anyway. We got a lot better in the second game against Davis County.”

Harter was right, as Durflinger and McMartin gave the Comets a presence at the net against the big-hitting Mustangs.

The game was close throughout. Birchmier and Eakins had four early blocks as the Mustangs fashioned a 12-8 lead. McMartin and Durflinger combined for three early blocks for the Comets and after their back-to-back kills, Cardinal was down just one at 14-13.

Eakins and Fenton again worked their games together to give the Mustangs the late lead they needed. After Eakins big hit off the block for a winner put the Mustangs up 18-16, she would have five consecutive kills at points 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24.

Fenton, who was a perfect 33 for 33 on the night serving, was the server to take advantage while Eakins was bombing away. Birchmier put an end to the night’s play with a kill to finish off the Comets.

Cardinal (12-13) will travel to Pella Christian to take on the Eagles Tuesday night to start district play.

“At this time of the season, it’s all about preparation for moving on” said Barnett. “I’d like to see us do a little better job of mixing up our offense.”

Davis County will be back in action today at the Fairfield Tournament
