Impressive runaway win against No. 13 CSI closes No. 2 IHCC's second winning weekend

OTTUMWA — Two teams in the top 15. Two teams that have scored over 100 points a game in the first three games of the season. Two teams that, when they last met, needed overtime to decide a winner.

Everything about Saturday night’s Reed Overhead Doors Classic finale had all the makings of being an all-time classic between No. 13 College of Southern Idaho and No. 2 Indian Hills. For Warriors head coach Barret Peery, the third meeting in three years with his former school had him putting the contest in very high regard.

“You’ve got what basically amounts to a Duke-Kentucky type of game on the JUCO level,” Peery said. “You’ve got two storied programs, top-five programs year in and year out with all of their history.”

Rarely, however, does a Duke-Kentucky type of game yield the kind of one-sided result that developed Saturday at the Hellyer Student Life Center. Facing a team that was supposed to be right at their level for what was supposed to be an instant classic, Indian Hills made an incredible early-season statement as a 15-0 run in the second half and a 20-5 surge in the second half opened the doors to a 35-point run away as IHCC topped the century mark for the fourth time in a row to open the season for the first time in program history.

Final score: Indian Hills 122, College of Southern Idaho 87. Just four games into the season, IHCC took their level of play to a whole new level to dominate the Golden Eagles.

“The biggest thing was, we went and got 33 assists, we stopped their scorers and our big guys were tremendous at protecting the rim on the other end,” Peery said. “We rebounded the ball so we could run. We had six guys in double figures because we tried to share the ball so well. The effort was really good.”
