ELDON – Cardinal used a big blast by Lindsey Davis and a tiebreaking hit from Delaney Ridgway to edge past Van Buren by the slimmest of margins for a second time this season. A two-out RBI double by Ridgway scored Lindsay Moore with the tiebreaking run in the bottom of the sixth and lifted the Comets to a 4-3 win over Van Buren.
The win gave Cardinal a season sweep of the Warriors. The Comets used a seventh-inning run earlier this year to beat Van Buren 1-0 in Keosauqua.
Lindsey Davis also came up with a two-run homer in the fifth inning for Cardinal after Van Buren rallied to tie the game at 1-1. Jordan Billups helped the Warriors answer back, driving in two runs with a pair of hits, including a double that tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth.
"We left 10 players on base, but it seemed like whenever we needed to our girls found a way to make a big play at the plate," Cardinal head softball coach Jerald Harter said.
"The girls played well enough to win," Warrior coach Eric Speer said.
The Comets (10-8, 6-2) will head to Farmington tonight for an unusual doubleheader. After wrapping up a game that was haulted by rain, which Cardinal led 11-0 in the third inning, the two teams will stick around to play a regularly scheduled SEISC South matchup.
Meanwhile, Van Buren (5-7, 2-6) will play Central Lee in Donnellson in SEISC South action today.
