OTTUMWA — The No. 1 ranked (Class 5A) Ottumwa softball team split games at its home alumni softball tournament on a Friday night that celebrated 40 years of Bulldog softball under coach Frank Huston as former players from years past watched from the bleachers.
The Bulldogs rallied from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh to beat No. 2 ranked (Class 5A) Pleasant Valley 8-7, but they fell to No. 6 ranked Waukee 3-1 in the last game of the round robin-style tourney.
The Bulldogs used 12 singles to overcome the Spartans slugger-heavy team — Pleasant Valley hit four home runs in the game — in the front half of the doubleheader. A pair of RBI singles by Nicole Peyton and Sydney Strunk and a game-winning pop fly to deep right field by Chelsea Griffiths helped Ottumwa prevail over the Spartans in the seventh.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the nightcap, but the offense was stagnant for the rest of the game. The Warriors runs came in the fifth, sixth and seventh.
Ottumwa (21-3) plays host to Des Moines Lincoln Wednesday at Huston Field.
