Panthers, Mustangs split two seventh-inning decisions

BLOOMFIELD — Both softball games Friday between Pekin and Davis County went down to the final inning with the score all tied up. Both the Panthers and the Mustangs took turns scoring the decisive run in the final frame as Davis County won game one in walk-off fashion, 3-2, before Pekin put up a run in the top of the seventh to get a split with a 2-1 victory in game two.

The Panthers showed plenty of fight, shaking off several errors to rally from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh to tie the opening game at 2-2. Ashlyn Zook, who struck out eight batters and allowed just one earned run in game one, has two hits including a double and a run while Madelyn Baker was 2-4 with an RBI.

Zook earned the save in game two, closing out a win for McKenna Gambell after the Pekin pitcher allowed just five hits to Davis County through the first 6 1/3 innings. Courtney Comstock was 2-3 in the nightcap win for the Panthers with a double and an RBI.

“I’m happy with how they played. They’re tightening up with the defense. I do want to see them hit a little better. Hopefully we can do that (this week),” Pekin head softball coach Allison Glick said.

The Panthers (4-4) had their trip to the Van Buren Invitational rained out on Saturday. After heading to Highland Monday, Pekin will host Louisa-Muscatine in Southeast Iowa Superconference north action tonight.

Davis County (3-7) will host Central Lee, Albia and No. 5 (2A) Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in a round-robin invitational tournament starting this morning at 9 a.m. The Mustangs faced the fifth-ranked Rockets in South Central Conference action on Monday as the Courier went to press.
