DONNELLSON — The Cardinal baseball team eked out a 4-3 victory over Central Lee Monday in SEISC-South conference.
Conner McElderry went 2-for-4 with an RBI to help Comets pull out the win. The last inning of the game didn't suffer from a deficit of drama. Tyler Albert gunned down The Hawks' Rich Galle, who represented the tying run of the game, in the bottom of the sixth to help secure the win for Cardinal.
Trevor Albert scored the decisive fourth run on a double steal in the top of the fifth. In addition, Cody Streeby drove in Tyler Albert with a double in the top of third and then went on to score himself on a McElderry base hit.
"We came out flat tonight. We left opportunities to score on the board, and also seemed flat defensively," Cardinal coach Thomas Hallgren said. "We will need to improve and be more consistent as we go through the season. The boys had to reach down and compete to get this win. It's always good to get conference wins on the road, however."
Cardinal (4-3, and 4-2) plays at New London Thursday.
