DES MOINES — The Ottumwa softball team swept Des Moines Hoover 7-4 and 20-5 Thursday in CIML Metro Conference action.
Alexis Winn homered and Megan Robertson picked up a win on the mound in the top half of the doubleheader. In the nightcap, Ottumwa provided a surplus of offensive fireworks highlighted by a 14-run, 13-hit sixth inning. Winn had an otherworldly inning, going 3-for-3 and bashing a grand slam home run. In addition, Ellie Hammack tied the school record with five hits.
Bulldogs sweep D.M. East Wednesday
DES MOINES — After it dropped two close games to Des Moines Lincoln earlier in the week, the Ottumwa softball team bounced back to sweep Des Moines East Wednesday night at Huston Field.
The Bulldogs used a big 5-run second and made that stand up for the 5-3 win in the opener and then they scored a seventh-inning run to win the nightcap 2-1.
"The losses to Lincoln were really disappointing because we felt like we had those games won," said Ottumwa Frank Huston. "This was a good way to bounce back. We hope to get a couple of more against Hoover."
The visitors had two hits in the opening inning, but left both runners stranded. Kassidi Henderson doubled off the fence in left field to lead off the first for Ottumwa. Later that evening, she delivered another double off the fence as the Bulldogs' last hitter of the night to drive in a run and secure the sweep for her team.
Robertson recorded two strikeouts in the second to keep the Scarlets off the board and then the Bulldogs came through with five runs in the bottom of the inning. That proved to be enough.
Madi Wiley doubled to start the rally with one out. Chloe Davis had a big hit with two outs to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Davis, a slap hitter, pulled a two strike pitch down the right field line to score the run.
