Bulldogs split games in Davenport

DAVENPORT – The Ottumwa softball team split two games at the Davenport West Invitational Friday.

The Bulldogs suffered a 3-1 loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier in their first game of the invite, but they bounced back to score a convincing 9-0 shutout victory over Davenport North in the nightcap.

Kelsey Peyton supplied Ottumwa with its only RBI in game one, a sacrifice fly that drove in Alexis Nelson in the bottom of the sixth. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but only managed to get one run across the plate.

Megan Robertson turned in a solid performance in a losing effort, allowing three runs on six hits in six innings. At times, however, Robertson did struggle with her control, issuing five walks to the Saints.

"The first game we didn't generate any offense," Ottumwa softball coach Frank Huston said. "They had too many base runners on."

The Bulldogs responded admirably to the defeat in game two with a balanced effort that coupled good hitting with a splendid pitching performance by Mackenzie Sheehan.

Alexis Winn doubled and drove in two runs to help spark the Ottumwa offense and Kaleigh Schreiner went 2-for-3 with an RBI. In addition, Madi Wiley belted a double and drove in two runs of her own.

Sheehan kept her undefeated streak intact, allowing five hits while striking out three and improving her record to 4-0. On Friday, she allowed five hits in five innings while striking out three.

"Game two was a good bounce back game," Huston said.

Ottumwa (12-4, 7-3) plays two more games in Davenport today against Muscatine and Mid-Prairie.
