Bulldogs compete at Senior meet

JOLIET, Ill. — Ottumwa track and field stars Charlette Flanders and Sarah Schulz were together one final time Saturday, competing for Team Iowa at the 14th annual Midwest Senior Spotlight Track and Field Meet.

The Iowa team competed against elite athletes from Team Wisconsin and Team Illinois. Schulz competed in three events, while Flanders ran in two.

Schulz ran the third leg for Team Iowa in the 4x100 meter relay as well as the 4x200 meter relay. The former took third with 51.53 seconds and the latter corralled fourth with a 1:50.03. In addition, Schulz took seventh place in the long jump with a vault of 16 feet, 2 inches.

Meanwhile, Flanders ran the third leg of Team Iowa’s 1,600 sprint medley relay, which took first with a time of 4:27.32. The team, however, also happened to be the only quartet running in the race. Aside from that, Flanders ran the second leg for the 4x400 relay team, which zipped to a second-place finish with 4:16.44.

The two Ottumwa standouts will be missed by next season’s Bulldog track and field team. Flanders and Schulz’s both boast impressive pedigrees festooned with more than one trip to the Class 4A State Track and Field Championships.

This season both Bulldogs qualified for state in more than one event. Flanders ran in the 400-meter dash and teamed with Ashlyn Thompson, Ellie Hammack and A.J. Nelson in the 4x400 relay and Schulz’s competed in the long jump and ran with Hammack, Erin Sheehy and Thompson in the 4x200 relay.

Flanders track and field career will continue in college at St. Ambrose University.
