DES MOINES — The Ottumwa freshman softball team fell to Des Moines East Wednesday in a doubleheader.
The Bulldogs suffered a 3-2 loss in the top half of the doubleheader and a 6-3 loss in the nightcap. The girls clung to a 2-1 lead in game one until they saw their lead evaporate in the fifth when the Scarlets tacked on two runs on an Ottumwa error and a base hit.
Ainsley Arnold suffered the loss on the mound. She allowed two earned runs on eights hits while striking out three in five innings. Madison Beltran and Ally Vitko both drilled doubles and Delaney Throckmorton, Arnold and Carrie Hagstrom all went 1-for-3 at the plate.
Vitko went on to double and drive in her 20th run in the nightcap. In addition, dalice Aguilar went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Kaylie Kaller, Shelby Clark, Hagstrom and Cierrah VanDePol each had a hit.
VanDePol took the loss on the mound. She allowed two earned runs on six hits in four innings.
Ottumwa plays at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Marshalltown.
