Hello race fans and welcome to another edition of The Pit Stop.
Last week, I wrote about the Southern Iowa Speedway Hall of Fame and how the fans, racers and crew members were able to vote on five of the 25 nominated candidates. The list of 25 candidates is a who’s-who in auto racing at Oskaloosa, which made it hard to pick only five to be voted into the inaugural class of the Hall of Fame.
The list of candidates for the SIS Hall-of-Fame includes Denny Banks, Aaron Brown, Merv Chandler, Bill Davis Sr., Jim and Joe Durian, Engle DeKock, Dan Feree, Dave Farren, Wendell Folkerts, Bobby Greiner Jr., Curt Hanson, Bob “Gabby” Hayes, Jeff Haines, Don Hoffman, Dean Hughes, Bob Maschman, Mel Morris, Ed Sanger, Randy Schroeder, Gary Story, Pat Surfas, Paul Van Zee, Danny Wallace, Pokie West and Bill Zwanzinger. I look at that list and wonder how do you only pick five of them to vote for?
There are nearly 20 SIS track championships among those candidates with national championships sprinkled in there as well. Gary Story wasn’t a racer, but he won the National Fan of the Year award a few times and went to over 150 races a year for several years.
I am sure it was a close vote and it will be interesting to see who the top five vote getters end up being.
This week has a lot of different events scheduled so there is virtually something for everyone to go out and spectate. The Southern Iowa Speedway kicks off the circle track racing this week by having Kelli Steil State Farm Insurance and Titan Machinery night tomorrow.
All of the regular weekly divisions of cars will be in action. Next week will be their 19th Annual Budweiser Stock Car Shootout presented by Musco July 2-3. I will write more about this event next week.
