KEOSAUQUA – Cardinal took advantage of four errors, leading to nine unearned runs, as an aggressive Comet offense poured it on late to earn a six-inning, 12-0 Southeast Iowa Superconference south shutout at Van Buren on Wednesday.
Danae Moses had two hits and scored three times while Lindsey Davis added two hits and three RBI. Taylor Murguia struck out eight Comet batters and allowed just three earned runs in the pitching circle for Van Buren.
“The top of their lineup is amazing,” Van Buren head softball coach Eric Speer said of the Comets. “The top five girls all got on and scored runs. They are so aggressive on the bases and it puts pressure on you to make plays on defense. That’s something we weren’t able to do again. We haven’t played defense well for a couple of weeks now.”
Van Buren (4-12, 3-7) will look to bounce back in a non-conference road test at Wapello on Friday. Cardinal (13-8, 8-3) will be back in SEISC south action at Central Lee tonight before hosting No. 3 (2A) Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Friday and playing in the Twin Cedars Tournament over the weekend.
