Mohawks clinch share of Bluegrass softball title

MORAVIA — A 7-4 win over the Seymour Warriorettes on Friday clinched at least a share of the Bluegrass Conference title for the Moravia Lady Mohawks. Moravia will be waiting for Murray to wrap up the last game of their conference schedule to determine if they’ll be the outright champion.

In the meantime, Moravia wrapped up an 11-8 regular season on Tuesday. Davis County won a wild matchup with the Mohawks, 9-8, in the first of multiple games on the night for the Mustangs that included a South Central Conference makeup against Centerville after the game was rained out on Monday.

The win over Seymour (9-6) was their ninth conference win of the year in their final Bluegrass Conference matchup. Murray plays Twin Cedars tomorrow. If Murray wins, they will share the title with Moravia. If Murray loses, the Lady Mohawks will be the outright champions.

In their win over Seymour, Moravia got off to a quick start, recording two-runs in the first inning and three more in the second to jump ahead 5-0 early. Seymour added a run in each of the third and fourth innings to make the score 5-2.

After a two-run fifth inning for Seymour, Moravia would pick up a run in the fifth and another run in the sixth to take the 7-4 victory.

Moravia’s Autumn McDanel went 3-for-4 to lead the Lady Mohawks with a home run and two RBIs. She also threw all seven innings for 14 strikeouts while allowing just four runs on two hits.

Moravia (11-8, 9-1 in BGC) will start regionals at home on July 7 against Mormon Trail at 7 p.m. If they win, they’ll play Wayne in Corydon on July 9 at 7:30 p.m.

The regional semifinal will be in Corydon on July 11 with the regional title game in Chariton on July 14.
