OSKALOOSA — Senior pitcher Jesse Van Dalen cooled off the red-hot bats of the Centerville Big Reds on Tuesday. The Oskaloosa hurler struck out 13 batters over seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits as the Indians salvaged a split with the 10th-ranked team in Class 3A, winning 3-1 over Centerville in game two after the Big Reds won the opener in six innings, 15-2.
The Big Reds scored at least one run in all but one inning of game one, building a 7-1 lead after four innings. Centerville put the game away against the Oskaloosa bullpen in the sixth, scoring eight runs on nine hits to clinch up an early victory.
Kolton Gonnerman led the 16-hit attack in game one for Centerville, going 4-5 at the plate with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Grant Walker moved to 4-0 on the mount with a complete-game four-hitter that included six strikeouts while added two hits, including a double, two RBI and three runs scored at the plate.
After getting the first run of game two in the third, Centerville would not score again the rest of the night. Oskaloosa immediately answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good.
No. 10 (3A) Centerville (19-7) will turn their attention back to clinching the South Central Conference title, which the Big Reds can do on Thursday with a sweep of a doubleheader at Chariton. Oskaloosa (13-11) is off until a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader at home Monday with Norwalk.
