OTTUMWA — She caught victory number 1,599 and was part of the team that brought Frank Huston his 1,600th career victory in 2011.
Perhaps it’s fitting that the only player to be honored as senior in 2014 and the only player on the field Thursday to be part of Huston’s 1,600th victory would have the last name Winn.
Alexis, the senior catcher that has been looked on somewhat as the coach on the field for the 2014 Ottumwa Softball Team, helped give the legendary coach of the Ottumwa Softball program another milestone victory on Thursday. Winn had two hits, including an RBI double, and watched as courtesy runner Alexis Nelson scored on Kaleigh Schreiner’s RBI hit in the sixth inning of game one against Des Moines Hoover, clinching an 11-1 win that clinched Huston’s 1,700th career victory.
Winn was far from done. After being honored by her family, friends, coaches and teammates between games, Winn added two more hits and added another run as Ottumwa rolled to a 12-0, three-inning shutout in game two against the Huskies.
“He takes pride in that number and we take pride in it for him,” Winn said of Huston. “By far, he’s the best coach I’ve ever played for.”
“I’m glad Alexis got to be part of this. She certainly helped make it a lot quicker to get from 1,600 to 1,700 wins,” Frank Huston added.
Winn was hardly the only Bulldog to step up on Thursday. Eight different players either collected a hit or scored a run in each of the victories over Hoover.
It’s hard to imagine any of the Bulldog players, however, having more to absorb Thursday before stepping onto the field. Winn’s senior night celebration included her teammates writing her name with chalk on the pavement surrounding Huston Field and with cups stuck into the fence out by the Bulldogs’ hitting cages.
