MOUNT PLEASANT — Austin Gridley homered as part of a three-hit opening game, then added a triple and two more RBI in game two, as fifth-ranked (3A) Fairfield scored a huge Southeast Conference sweep over Mount Pleasant on Monday. The wins put the Trojans in control of the conference race with a doubleheader at home against Washington on Thursday left to win to earn the outright conference crown.
Fairfield also learned its road to the make it to the Class 3A State Baseball Tournament on Tuesday. The Trojans will open at home against Fort Madison on Friday, July 18, right after a contest between Oskaloosa and Mount Pleasant at 5 p.m. The two winners will play for the District 12 title on Monday, July 21, in Fairfield.
On the other side of Substate 6, No. 8 Centerville will open at home against South Central Conference rival Chariton on Friday, July 18, at 7 p.m. The winner will face either Keokuk or Knoxville on Monday, July 21, at Pat Daugherty Field in Centerville with that winner advancing with the winner in Fairfield to the substate final on Wednesady, July 23, at a site to be determined.
Last year's substate final between district champions in Fairfield and Centerville met at Legion Memorial Field in Ottumwa. The Bulldogs may be playing on their home diamond that night, however, in the Class 4A, Substate 6 Final.
Ottumwa learned on Tuesday they will be the second-seed in their substate and will open at home against Indianola on Friday, July 18, at 7 p.m. If the Bulldogs win, they will either host Des Moines Lincoln or West Des Moines Valley on Monday, July 21, should top-seeded Des Moines East win over Des Moines Hoover. An upset win by Hoover would allow Ottumwa to play at home in the substate final.
