SIGOURNEY — Sigourney jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two innings of play, but couldn't hold off HLV and fell 6-4 in Class 1A, Region 6 semifinal softball action Friday night in Sigourney.
Sigourney scored an unearned run in the first and were able to bunch three of its 11 hits in the second for another run. Brooke Schroeder drove in the run with a single.
HLV tied it in the third when Kate Schaefer singled in two runners that had reached base via a walk. A walk, a Savage error, and Kendra Schafbuch's single led to three runs in the HLV fourth for a 5-2 lead.
HLV added an insurance run in the sixth. Another Savage error caused the run to be unearned.
Sigourney rallied in the top of the seventh and had the tying runs on base but a long drive to the fence in right center field was caught for the final out. In the seventh, Jordan Carter singled with two out to start the Savage threat. Maddi Denny drove in Carter with a double and, when Karah Appleget followed with a single, the Savages had pulled to within 6-4.
Emily Danowsky's hit put two runners on, but Brooke Waechter's long shot to the fence was hauled in by Schaefer to retire Sigourney and end their tournament run. Sigourney out hit HLV 11 to 5 but left eight runners on base.
"We had plenty of hits, but just couldn't get enough critical ones," said Sigourney coach Shelly Streigle.
