GRINNELL – Cameron Baumann homered and drove in two runs as fifth-ranked (3A) Fairfield pulled out a 4-2 win at Grinnell on Monday, extending the Trojans’ late-season winning streak to six straight games.
Fairfield (25-7) wrapped up the regular season Tuesday with a varsity doubleheader against Oskaloosa. The Trojans will open Class 3A district postseason play Friday at home against Southeast Conference rival Fort Madison.
EBF snapsseven-game skid in postseason opener
EDDYVILLE – Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont started the postseason off on a winning note, winning 11-1 in five innings over Cardinal on Monday in the opening round of Class 2A, District 13 play. The game came two days after rain soaked the diamond at EBF, causing the game to be postponed.
EBF (13-21) trailed Davis County (12-19) 5-0 in the fifth inning of the Class 2A, District 13 semifinals Tuesday as the Courier went to press. That winner would face Albia in the district finals Saturday night in Eddyville at 7 p.m.
Late hit lifts Sigourney
PEKIN – Two extra nights proved to be worth the wait for the Sigourney baseball team, who used a late two-run hit by Cole Streigle to win a back-and-forth Class 1A, District 11 opening round contest over Keota. The Savages rallied back after Keota erased a 5-0 deficit to take an 8-6 lead late in the contest.
The walk-off hit sent Sigourney (7-19) into a district quarterfinal contest with Pekin on Tuesday. Pekin handed Sigourney a 1-0 loss on Tuesday.
