Road to Williamsport begins in Centerville

CENTERVILLE — If you’re a baseball fan, two little league baseball fields on North Park Avenue in Centerville will be the place to be from July 19-26.

Eight teams from around the state of Iowa will be in Centerville during that timeframe competing in the 2014 Iowa 11-12 year old Little League state baseball tournament.

The Appanoose County All-Star team qualified for the state tournament after an undefeated run in the district tournament. Joining them will be fellow district 7 opponent Lucas County. From the other districts around Iowa, Johnston American, Grandview Little League, Sioux City Headid, Boone, Knoxville and Davenport Southeast will also be competing.

Action will open on Saturday at 11 a.m., with Johnston American and Lucas County facing off. Grandview will play Sioux City Headid and Boone will play Knoxville before Appanoose closing the night with a 5 p.m. game against Davenport Southeast.

Following Appanoose County’s contest, opening night ceremonies will unfold. Guest speaker Mike Boddicker will address those in attendance. After that, a team picnic will be held followed by a performance by Nashville Recording Artist Branch and Dean, who will be performing a free show to the public and players.

Besides being crowned the Iowa state champion, the winner of the tournament will advance to regional play in Indianapolis and be just one-step away from heading to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

This year will be the second straight year Appanoose County has hosted a little league state tournament. Last year, they hosted the 9-10 year old all-star tournament.
