Slow start costs Davis County

BLOOMFIELD — The eighth-ranked Blue Jays from Bondurant-Farrar ran just nine offensive plays in the game’s first seven minutes but used three long scoring plays to lead 19-0. Davis County then closed to within 19-13 early in the second half before dropping the Class 2A, District 6 football contest, 32-13, Friday night in Bloomfield.

Many fans leaving the Friday night contest will say for three and a half quarters, it was an even game. That spin was not quite right, as the visitors continued to gain yards. Even though the Mustang defense would bend but not break, the Blue Jays would hold a commanding edge in total yards (488-235).

B-F took the opening kickoff 72 yards on just two plays for a quick 6-0 lead. Both plays were passes from quarterback Josh Block to Patrick Rooney. The scoring strike covered 30 yards.

“We knew that they were capable of throwing the ball,” said Mustang co-coach Todd White. “The slow start is not typical of our guys, especially after a good week of practice.”

Davis County failed to convert a fourth down play and the visitors went 63 yards on just three plays. Block hooked up with Rooney again, this time from 34 yards out.

The third B-F series started at their own 46. Four plays later, Grant Peterson put the Blue Jays up 19-0 with a 29 yard touchdown run.

The Mustangs would stop two long B-F drives in the second quarter to keep the visitors off the board and give themselves a chance to get back into the game. They finally got on the board with just under two minutes to play in the half. Calvin Utt intercepted a pass and returned it 54 yards to the B-F six. He would score three plays later on a one-yard run.

The big interception and score started to build Mustang momentum and when DC blocked a Blue Jay field goal late in the half, the Mustangs had the momentum heading to the locker room.

Davis County has rushed the ball for big yards in each game this season, but the visitors limited the Mustangs to just 58 yards rushing in the opening half.

“They brought an extra guy up into the box that we hadn’t seenn them do on film,” said Mustang co-coach Joe Rasmussen. “They are the best run defense team we’ve faced this year.”

The first DC drive of the second half resulted in another Mustang touchdown. After Calvin Utt hit Park Mikels with a 17-yard scoring pass, the score was 19-13.

B-F scored on their opening drive of the second half to stem the Mustang charge. Peterson scored on a 29 yard run to let the Blue Jays go up 25-13.

The visitors went up go up 32-13 with just under nine minutes left in the game. Block threw his third touchdown pass, this one 17 yards to David Swatzky.

The Mustangs had two fourth quarter chances to score with a short field but couldn’t push across a score. A 68 yard kick-off return by Damen Dixon gave the Mustangs the ball at the visitors’ 24. B-F intercepted a pass to end that drive. The final DC drive started at the B-F 48 but they turned the ball over on downs. B-F then ran the ball to kill the final five minutes of the hard fought, hard hitting game.

“Our guys really laid it on the line tonight,” said White. “We’re proud of their effort.”

Davis County (5-2, 2-2) continues district play next week on the road against PCM in Monroe.
