AREA BOYS BASKETBALL ACTION: Comets pick up first win of the season

OTTUMWA — ELDON — The Cardinal boys basketball team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday night, downing Fairfield Maharishi (MSAE) 56-35 in Southeast Iowa SuperConference action.

Jonathan Pedersen led the Comets with 16 points and nine rebounds while Charlie Rachford scored 13 and Dakota Showman dished eight assists. Showman and Rachford also had five steals each in the contest.

Surya Koran Sawhney led MSAE with 12 points.

The Comets (1-2) will host New London on Friday.

Big Reds down Putnam County

UNIONVILLE, Mo. — Colton Gonnerman scored 21 points and Mike Starcevich added 16 to lead five players in double figures in Centerville’s 80-65 win over Putnam County on Tuesday.

Logan Dabney scored 13 points, Garrett Faris added 11 and Peyton Busch scored 10 for Centerville, who improved to 2-1 on the season.

Dabney and Starcevich were also forces on the glass, as Dabney grabbed 14 rebunds and Starcevich hauled in 10. Busch dished seven assists for the Big Reds, who will host Davis County Friday night.

Putnam County’s Deion Hunt led all scorers with 34 points.

Baker shoots Albia past Fairfield

ALBIA — Matt Baker drained six 3-pointers and finished with 26 points as the Albia boys basketball team improved to 2-1 with a 57-48 non-conference win over Fairfield on Tuesday.

Tanner Kellogg added 13 points for the Blue Demons, while Tanner Wynn chipped in with nine.

Spencer Peterman led Fairfield with 12 points.

The Blue Demons will open South Central Conference play Friday when they host Chariton.

Sigourney suffers first loss

SIGOURNEY — The Sigourney boys basketball team took a tough loss at home to Montezuma, 43-40, in South Iowa Cedar League action on Tuesday.

The Savages led most of the way, but Montezuma outscored Sigourney 17-8 in the fourth quarter to claim the victory.

Vaclav Bujnoch led Sigourney with 13 points and Brandon Stuhr added 12 as the Savages (2-1) lost for the first time this season.

Coleton Thompkins and Zach Gibson each had 11 points for Montezuma (3-0).

Sigourney will travel to North Mahaska on Friday.
