AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL: Panthers fall to fifth-ranked Mediapolis

PEKIN —  The Pekin girls basketball team suffered a 55-20 defeat to undefeated, fifth-ranked (3A) Mediapolis Saturday in SEISC North conference action.

Pekin’s Samantha Wright, Gwynne Wright, Tiana Slaney and McKenna Gambell all finished with four points for Pekin. The Panthers struggled to stop  Bulldog Haley Hillyard, who finished with a game-high 15 points.

Jessica Horras pulled down 10 rebounds for Pekin and Madelyn Baker grabbed four boards. The Panthers struggled to take care of the ball against their formidable opponents, committing 25 turnovers. They also struggled to score, finishing with only seven field goals.

Pekin (4-3, 4-3) will try to get back on the right track when it takes on Iowa Mennonite Tuesday in a SEISC North Conference game.

Mediapolis 55, Pekin 20

M-U falls to Mormon Trail

MOULTON — The Moulton-Udell girls basketball team fell to Mormon Trail 51-37 Friday in  Bluegrass Conference action despite getting  25-points and 13 rebounds out of Eagle Natalie Potter. Rachel DeCook chipped in seven points handed out a team-high three assists. Ashlyn Martin complemented Potter’s rebounding efforts with six boards of her own.

“The first quarter really hurt. We were really flat,” Eagles head coach Jason Ogden said. The second half was much better, but we still have to improve in a lot of areas.”

The Eagles (1-3, 1-1) play at Lamoni Tuesday.
