State prep bowling postponed until March

DES MOINES — The Ottumwa girls and boys bowling team will have to wait a little longer to defend and contend for the coed Class 2A state bowling championship.

The state tournament scheduled to take place in Des Moines at the Plaza Lanes Thursday and Friday this week has been postponed until Monday and Tuesday, March 11-12 because of the snowstorm that is expected to blanket Des Moines with 6-7 inches of snow. The Bulldogs will compete in the Class 2A meet on Tuesday, March 12, scheduled to start at 11 a.m.

The storm — which is expected to dump snow on most of the state — also is expected to drop eight inches of snow on Ottumwa. Since the weather is expected to worsen quickly, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and the Iowa High School Athletic Association don’t want people to drive home in unsafe conditions, according to a press release.

The tournaments will begin at 11 a.m. on both days in March, but doors will be opened to the public one hour before the competition.

The Bulldog girls have been perfect this season, going 11-0 on the season and 9-0 in the CIML Metro Conference. Meanwhile, the boys are 8-3 and 8-2 in Metro conference meets.

The Bulldog girls cruised to an easy victory at the state qualifying meets, blasting their closest competition by over 600 pins. Ottumwa’s overall score was elevated by Bailey Palmer, who posted the top individual score, rolling an average of 211. The freshman phenom was one of five Bulldogs on Ottumwa’s hyper-talented team to finish in the top 10.

The Ottumwa boys pulled off a highly-competitive 3,005-3,002 victory over second-place West Des Moines Valley at the state qualifying meet. Their score was bolstered by Isaac Goodman, who rolled the boys second highest individual average of 233.5. The Bulldogs, who have shown vast improvement since their first meet, had three bowlers finish in the top 10 and four finish in the top 15 at the qualifying meet.
