SIGOURNEY — The Sigourney softball season, fresh off a very successful season, got what could be an even better year off to a winning start in South Iowa Cedar League action Monday. Jordan Carter struck out 11 batters in her first pitching start of her senior season and Madi Denny came up with a double, an RBI and two hits as the Savages won on the road at English Valleys 5-2.

"I think the opener went really well. We had a new player to move in a third for our only senior that we lost and made a couple of nice plays," Sigourney head coach Shelly Streigle said. "Jordan striking out 11 batters certainly never hurts, but when the ball was put in play the girls made nice plays. The girls were excited and got the season off to a winning start."

Sigourney, 21-7 a year, take their 1-0 overall and SICL record back for their home opener Wednesday at 6 p.m. against another conference foe in HLV.
