Schulz shines at Southeast Polk invite

PLEASANTVILLE — Sarah Schulz leapt into the Bob Warren Hall of Fame at the Ottumwa track and field teams first scored meet at the Southeast Polk Invitational.

Schulz took second in the long jump with a career-best leap of 16-4.25, and, in doing so, helped propel the Bulldogs to a fifth place finish with 72 points.

The 4x400 team of Sydney Strunk, Charlette Flanders, Ellie Hammack and Ashlyn Thompson also strengthened Ottumwa’s final tally by grabbing second with a time of 4:19.95. Thompson out-ran Southeast Polk’s runner in the final 100 meters to snare a second place finish for her team.

The race carried extra significance because Hammack returned to the group from a mild hamstring injury, Ottumwa girls coach Steve Green said.

“Each girl ran outstanding finishes to the race,” he said.

In other events, Sydney Strunk took third in the 400 dash with 28.11 and Charlette Flanders placed fourth with 1:04.03.

The Bulldogs will compete again Tuesday at Johnston.
